A cladistic re-assessment of the <i>Polycystis</i> species complex (Polycystididae, Eukalyptorhynchia) OMA
Artois, T.J.; Schockaert, E.R..
The taxonomy of the genus <i>Polycystis</i> Koelliker, 1845 <i>sensu</i> Schockaert & Karling, 1975 is discussed. Character analysis reveals the monophyletic state of the three species groups these authors defined within it. As no synapomorphies for the three groups can be found, the genus is split in three genera: <i>Polycystis</i> Koelliker, 1845, <i>Macrorhynchus</i> Graff, 1882 and <i>Paulodora Marcus</i>, 1948. The systematic position of <i>Macrorhynchus yaganus</i> (Marcus, 1954) Evdonin, 1977 is also discussed, resulting in the erection of the new genus <i>Marcusia</i> gen. n.

Horizontal distribution of the Plathelminthes in a sandy beach of the Belgian coast OMA
Jouk, P.E.H.; Martens, P.M.; Schockaert, E.R..
Studies of the horizontal distribution of the Plathelminthes in sandy beaches have up to now mainly been carried out on the German island of Sylt where the beaches consist of a steep "Prallhang" and a flat wadden area. Beaches of the Belgian coast are very flat, only gently sloping and with a different sediment compared to the Sylt beaches. This study reports on the distribution of the turbellarians in such a flat beach; the discussion is mainly focussed on the comparison with the results of the German investigators.

<i>Syndesmis longicanalis</i> sp.nov., an umagillid turbellarian (Plathelminthes) from echinoids from the Kenyan coast OMA
Moens, J.B.; Martens, E.E.; Schockaert, E.R..
A new species of <i>Umalgillid rhabdocoel</i> is described from echinoids from the Kenyan coast. <i>Syndesmis longicanalis</i> sp.nov. is found in the intestine of both <i>Tripneustes gratilla</i> and <i>Toxopneustes pileolus</i> collected near Mombasa. The most stricking characteristic, which distinguishes the new species from all known species of the <i>Syndesmis-Syndisyrinx</i> group is the very long scelotic bursal canal and the three ventral glandular papillae. A more detailed comparison between the specimens from the two different hosts demonstrates that they belong to the same species although some differences are statistically significant.

Observations on the ultrastructure of the copulatory organ of <i>Archilopsis unipunctata</i> (Fabricius, 1826) (Proseriata, Monocelididae) OMA
Martens, E.E.; Schockaert, E.R..
The copulatory organ in adult specimens of <i>Archilopsis unipunctata</i> has been studied by transmission electron microscopy. This copulatory organ is of the conjuncta-duplex type with eversible cirrus. The seminal vesicle, lined with a nucleate epithelium, is surrounded by spirally arranged muscles. The fibers are enclosed in a sheath that is continuous with the septum of the bulbus and the basement lamina of the male canal epithelium. Distally to the seminal vesicle the bulbus is filled with the secretory cell-necks of the prostate glands. The male canal shows three different parts: seminal duct, ejaculatory duct and eversible cirrus. At the transition of seminal duct and ejaculatory duct two prostate ducts open into the lumen. The...

Observations on the ultrastructure of the proboscis epithelia in <i>Polycystis naegelii</i> Kölliker (Turbellaria Eukalyptorhynchia) and some associated structures OMA
Schockaert, E.R.; Bedini, C..
The epithelium of the anterior tip of the bodywall, of the proboscis cavity and of the proboscis cone in <i>Polycystis naegelii</i> has been studied with the electron microscope. These epithelia are formed by six syncytial belts separated from each other by cellular limits: one belt belongs to the epidermis, three line the cavity and two cover the cone. The posterior belt of the cavity and those of the cone are of the insunk type bringing about a peculiar relationship between the latter two. Moreover, they are associated with muscular elements under the basal cone belt but above its basement membrane. Nine different kinds of glands have been observed erupting at the surface of the epithelia in the studied area, while six different sorts of...

On the anatomy of <i>Gnosonesima mediterranea</i> sp.n. from Corsica (Plathelminthes, Lecithoepitheliata) with special emphasis on its genito-intestinal connections OMA
Martens, P.M.; Schockaert, E.R..
<i>Gnosonesima mediterranea</i> sp. n. from algae in the Bay of Calvi (Corsica) is described. It is the first record of a <i>Gnosonesima</i>-species from the Mediterranean. The pharynx and the genital organs are extensively described at the light microscopic level from 1 µm Epon sections. The male "accessory organ" is revealed to be an andro-genito-intestinal connection with a high similarity with the female genito-intestinal connection. The taxonomic position of the Lecithoepitheliata is discussed.

Phylogeny of the digonoporid Proseriata OMA
Martens, P.M.; Schockaert, E.R..
From a comparative study of the ultrastructure of the hard parts in the copulatory organ of the Proseriata, E. Martens (1984) concluded for the monocelidid genera she studied that in all except the genus <i>Archimonocelis</i>, the spines and styles are basal lamina differentiations: the autapomorphy for the monophylum Monocelididae.<i>Archimonocelis</i> has intracellular hard parts as in all other Proseriata, clearly the plesiomorphic condition. At the same time it was also found from a karyological viewpoint that there are arguments that <i>Archimonocelis</i> does not belong to the Monocelididae at all.

Sand dwelling Turbellaria from the Netherlands Delta area OMA
Martens, P.M.; Schockaert, E.R..
Sand dwelling Turbellaria from the Delta of the Rivers Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt have been investigated. Thirty-eight samples taken from littoral and sublittoral stations in the Grevelingen, Eastern and Western Scheldt have been analysed. Thirty-three species were recorded (Acoela were not considered); twenty-four of them are new for the area and seven new species are described. Density and diversity of Turbellaria were higher in the Eastern Scheldt than in the Western Scheldt or in the Lake Grevelingen. A maximum density of 82 ind./100 cm³ was noted. A tentative calculation on relative abundance of the representatives of the different Turbellaria orders is established. Proseriata seem to be dominant in the localities studied.

Spermiogenesis and spermultrastructure in <i>Thylacorhynchus ambronensis</i> (Schizorhynchia, Kalyptorhynchia, Platyhelminthes) OMA
Watson, N.A.; Schockaert, E.R..
Comprehensive ultrastructural investigation of spermiogenesis and the mature sperm in <i>Thylacorhynchus ambronensis</i> revealed a number of features valuable for cladistic analysis. Two basal bodies lie on either side of an intercentriolar body in the zone of differentiation of the spermatid, but only one develops into a normal flagellum while the other remains as a small bud, eventually disappearing. Structures within and surrounding the two basal bodies differ, and, contrary to observations in another monoaxonemal schizorhynch (<i>Baltoplana magna</i>), the two basal bodies become separated and only that of the normal flagellum is carried distally from the cytophore which unites an isogenic group of spermatids. A spiralling...

Studies on the ultrastructure of the genital organs in Proseriata (Turbellaria): I. <i>Cirrifera aculeata</i> (Ax) (Coelogynoporidae) OMA
Martens, E.E.; Schockaert, E.R..
The genital organs in adult specimens of <i>Cirrifera aculeata</i> have been studied by transmission electron microscopy. The male copulatory organ is of the conjuncta-duplex type provided with a spiny cirrus. The structure of the epithelia lining the different parts of the genital organs is described. The cirrus spines and the spines in the genital atrium are shown to be intracellular specializations. The structure and location of the cirrus spines in the Proseriata studied so far are discussed.

Systematics and evolution in Polycystididae (Turbellaria, Kalyptorhyncia) OMA
Schockaert, E.R..
Possible evolutionary trends within Polycystididae have been indicated by Karling (1956) while studying the male genital organs of seyeral turbellarian groups. For the moment his ideas seem the most valuable basis for establishing an intrafamiliar system of Polycystididae, and have hence been applied formally (Schockaert, 1974). However, it can be demonstrated with several examples that the underlying principles prove to be unsatisfactory when one tries to apply Hennig's methodology:-the subfamily Duplacrorhynchinae Schockaert & Karling, 1970, can be recognized as containing the most plesimorph polycystidids; a synapomorph character that would give us an indication of the monophyly of this taxon is lacking;-the homology of some glandular elements (al!...

The anatomy and ultrastructure of the proboscis in <i>Zonorhynchus</i>-species and implications for phylogenetic relationships within the Eukalyptorhynchia Meixner, 1928 (Platyhelminthes, Rhabdocoela) OMA
De Vocht, A.J.-P.; Schockaert, E.R..
The ultrastructural morphology of the proboscis in species of the genus <i>Zonorhynchus</i> Karling, 1952 is investigated. The proboscis epithelia are organized in four belts. The apical cone epithelium has intra-epithelial nuclei, and the distal belt of the sheath epithelium is formed by numerous cells lacking a distinct pattern. Multiciliary receptors are lacking. The diversity in ultrastructural data on the proboscis is used to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships within the Cicerinidae and Eukalyptorhynchia. A bipartite cone epithelium as found in <i>Zonorhynchus</i>-species is a common feature for all eukalyptorhynch species investigated. A syncytial basal cone epithelium is a synapomorphic character for all species except...

The importance of turbellarians in the marine meiobenthos: a review OMA
Martens, P.M.; Schockaert, E.R..
Recent data and opinions on meiofaunal ecology are briefly reviewed; and from scattered data, the place of turbellarians in the meiobenthic community is discussed. Turbellarian diversity is of the same magnitude higher in sandy habitats than in muddy bottoms. In sand, turbellarian diversity is of the same magnitude as that of other important meiofaunal taxa, while densities range between 7-25% of the total meiofauna. Mean individual turbellarian dry weight seems to be four times that of nematodes and in sandy habitats turbellarian biomass may be equal to or exceed that of nematodes. Most turbellarian species may be considered as predators and in this respect may take the place occupied by macrofaunal species in muddy sediments.
